  Shannon

Scout

Scout

  Brief introduction

Shannon Bufton, who comes from Australiaand now lives in Beijing, once worked on architecture and graphic design. Withpassion for cycling, he has devoted himself in promoting cycling culture inChina over the past 9 years. Him being a regular and motivated participant ofGranfondo Yunnan, we thought it opportune to have a chat with Shannon inadvance of this year's event.

Shannon is the co-founder of STC (Smarter Than Car), which is a platform for promoting cycling in Beijing. In 2010, he founded SERK Cycling, a high-end retail bike concept store with an attached bar and cafe in Beijing's historic Hutong area. In 2013 SERK was listed as 1 of the 10 coolest bike shops worldwide by cyclingtips.com.au. Shannon enjoys exploring new places and roads on bike. In 2016 Colorful Yunnan International Granfondo Cycling Festival, Shannon got the 7th place in GC and 2nd place in age 40+ group.

  1. Who is Shannon Bufton?

I’m the co-owner of Serk Cycling inBeijing. We are a bike tour company and run a bike shop and club in Beijing

  2. When and how did you get into cycling?

I started racing when I was 14 in 1990. Igrew up on a farm in Australia so I purchased my first road bike so I couldhave freedom to travel away from the farm when I was young. My friends and Itravelled 100’s of kilometres around the countryside and before too long we gotvery fit and started to race. Back then cycling wasn’t as popular as it is nowin Australia so the the races were much smaller and as young adults we racedwith the senior men.

  3. Who or what inspires you in your cyclinglife?

Now mostly I ride for fun. I love toexplore new places and roads on my bike. With our bike tour business I’m luckyto regularly travel off the beaten track to scout out new locations and routes.Discovery is what inspires me the most !

  4. You have promoted cycling in Beijing forseveral years, from STC to serk. Would you like to share your experience withus?

For the past 9 years we’ve been promotingnew cycling culture – from creating events such as the Beijing Vintage Ridethrough to helping with media at the Tour of Beijing we’ve always done our bestto help bring new cycling culture to China. China was once the Bicycle Kingdomand I see it has huge potential to again be a nation famous for its bikes and cycling.

  5. What do you think about the developmentof cycling in China these years?

It’s going really well. It’s great to seeexcellent events like the Granfondo Yunnan developing so well and also to seethe development of young Chinese riders. On top of that the share bike crazehappening in the cities is also really interesting and innovative. I think wewill see this Chinese concept continue to grow and develop overseas as well.

  6. Last year in 2016 Granfondo Yunnan, youwon the 7th place GC, 2nd place in the 40+ age group. Are you satisfied withthat? What’s your strength and weakness in the race?

Pretty satisfied. Granfondo Yunnan is arace I like to target each year and it takes about 8 weeks of hard training toget into shape. I think my strength and weakness is my age. I have a lot ofracing experience so know how to conserve my energy and make sure I’m savingevery watt for the critical parts of the race. Age is also a disadvantage asI’m not anywhere as strong as when I was younger so it gets harder and harderto hang on with the strongest climbers each year.

  7. For 2017 Granfondo Yunnan, do you haveany plan? About the trip and result.

About the result – no plan. Just do my bestand have a good time ! Serk is organizing a VIP package for riders interestedin some extra care during the race. We’ll have a special team van, a mechanicand a team of helpers available to make sure each rider has a smooth race.Saving energy after the race by having help and getting back to the hotel earlyis also a good advantage. Serk will take everything so you can focus on therace !

  8. Any advice for the newer to Granfondo?

Practice riding in a peloton before youcome to the race. There are a high number of riders at the start each day andthe more skill you have at navigating through the group to get and stay at thefront is very useful.

Make sure all your gear is veryorganized. Bring all the gear you will need for every type of weather conditionand organize it well. Lay out your helmet, race food and spares each nightbefore you go to bed so that everything is ready to go in the morning and youaren’t wasting precious energy stressing out. The more organized you are themore energy you’ll have for the race and the more time you’ll have to recover !

  9. What do you enjoy doing away from cycling?

  Sleeping and eating

  10. What would you like to do in thefuture?

Riding my bike and sleeping and eating !
